Wish You Were Here Project

To celebrate the city we live in Perth Festival's Rio Tinto Education Program ran poetry workshops for school children between the ages of 8 to 14 with acclaimed WA poet/writer Vivienne Glance. Sixty school children participated in the workshops from Roseworth Primary, Woodlands Primary and Shenton College to write about their favourite spaces and places in Perth.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

  • To generate a response through creative writing, poetry or prose around the idea of place and home
  • Use images, sound and language to build a vocabulary
  • Encourage an appreciation for poetry and enthusiasm for writing
  • Select imaginative words and phrases to accompany images of your favourite place

Artist and photographer Jarrad Seng used the students' poetry as inspiration to photograph each child's favourite place and create an artwork that combined the poetry text with his image. The result was truly beautiful. All artworks can be viewed at http://www.perthfestival/wishyouwerehere.

Watch out for the postcards that have been made out of these stunning images available in cafes, retail stores and public spaces around the city! They're for you and they're free to send around the world before, during and after the Festival.
